Lessons in Welsh Academic study We are delighted to report that the new course in Modern Welsh and Language at Sydney University which started last year will be available again in 2011. The lecturer is John Coombs, an Australian who studied the language in Wales and who is also Treasurer of Sydney Welsh Society. John’s other interests include Celtic history, culture and music. If you would like to know about the Modern Welsh and Language course, please contact John at wjcoombs@ihug.com.au Informal classes While the introduction of the Sydney University course is a most welcome development, we appreciate that some people would prefer to learn Welsh in a less formal setting than academia. For some time we have been discussing how the Society might be able to sponsor Welsh lessons at a number of convenient locations in and around Sydney. For the present, however, those options are limited. We need more Welsh speakers to volunteer to teach the language, perhaps in their own homes – and we need to ensure that they themselves can be fairly rewarded for their efforts. We are also planning to seek institutional support - direct from Wales – to encourage the provision of Welsh language teaching just as the Irish Government currently provides funding for such initiatives. In the meantime, whether you are a beginner or an advanced speaker you are welcome to contact Garry O’Shea, who has organised Learn Cymraeg (Welsh) classes at West Ryde on Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm. Garry – another Australian who learned his Welsh in Wales – advises it’s best to arrive at 6:30 pm to socialise with fellow class members beforehand. His home is within easy walking distance of West Ryde railway station. For further information please contact him on 02 9807 5265 or email him at gossy@hotmail.com.
