Choir’s cracking pace
11/15/2011 1:15:54 PM
Sydney Welsh Choir’s busy concert schedule has ensured the choristers travel far and wide during 2011, entertaining sell-out audiences with programs featuring some of the finest music of Wales.
While the St David’s Day concert at Carnarvon Golf Club was the highlight of the start of the concert season, the choir was “on the road” for subsequent performances at Sutherland Entertainment Centre, Dee Why RSL and Springwood Salvation Army. Then came visits to Auburn RSL, Turramurra Uniting Church, Belmore Church of Christ and, for the sixth time, Brentwood Village, Kincumber.
According to president David Evans, the choir was warmly welcomed at St Finbar’s Church, Glenbrook, where the concert also featured the St Finbar’s School Choir.
“Our Music Director, Viv Llewellyn, who teaches part time at the school, had ably tutored the students in Welsh pronunciation,” said David. “So the school’s presentation of several pieces – and particularly Ar Hyd Y Nos – went down a treat.
“At the end of the concert both choirs united to sing Send Us As Your Blessing Lord, a song of dedication to two young people who were leaving for World Youth Day in Spain.
“The next concert was at Hopetoun Village, Castle Hill, where the choir was led by Mary Ball with assistance from Brian Lewis because Viv and Avril Llewellyn had journeyed to Patagonia to attend the 9th International Symposium of Music.”
Then came visits to Lakes Anglican Church, Gorokan, the Casula Powerhouse Theatre, Thornleigh Hillcrest Uniting Church, Frank Vickery Village, Sylvania, and French’s Forest Baptist Church.
Next on the horizon: Holy Trinity Church, Wentworth Falls, on 29 October, the Orpheum Theatre, Cremorne, on 13 November and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club on 19 November.
